Corona virus Medicine or vaccine Available?

Corona Medicine:– Corona virus is a newly identified type of virus which has caused a recent respiratory illness spree. It first appeared in December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in China. The exact source hasn’t yet been found but the general hypotheses are that it might have originated from a seafood market in Wuhan. But this isn’t fully proven. It has been observed that symptoms begin showing up in people with two weeks of exposure to the virus. The symptoms of corona virus include shortness of breath, fever, and cough. There is still no Corona virus medicine available at this time.

As one can imagine, the absence of medicine and the lack of adequate information about this new disease has sparked a lot of myths. These myths cause unnecessary panic among people. Some of the most common COVID-19 myths are:

corona virus

Myth: Cold and snow can eliminate Corona virus Medication Available? Corona virus Medication Available?

There has been no reason to believe that snow or cold weather can get rid of COVID-19. This is because no matter the external temperature the internal body temperature remains the same. The best way to protect yourself against Corona virus is by frequently cleaning up your hands with soap and clean water or an alcohol-based hand rub.

Myth: Hot bath prevents Corona virus

This is a wrong presumption because your body temperature will remain the same regardless of how hot a shower you take. On the contrary, hot shower or baths can be harmful since it can even burn your body. To prevent COVID-19, just wash your hands with soap and clean water. Also avoid touching your mouth, nose, and eyes with your hands.

Myth: Mosquitoes spread COVID-19

There has been no evidence or information which suggests that Corona virus could be transmitted through mosquitoes. The new virus spreads through droplets of saliva, nose discharge or when a person coughs. To protect yourself, just avoid close contact with people who are sneezing and coughing.

Myth: Spraying chlorine or alcohol all over the body can eliminate Corona virus

Chlorine or alcohol spray won’t kill the viruses which are already present in your body. Moreover, there is a risk that such substances can be harmful to mucous membranes like the mouth and eyes. Instead of spraying such substances on your body, you can instead opt to use them to disinfect surfaces that you think might be contaminated. But even then they need to be used under appropriate recommendations.

Myth: Pets can spread COVID- 19

Currently, there is no evidence which points to the fact that pets like cats or dogs can be infected with the new Corona virus or aid in spreading it. But it’s always advisable that you wash your hands with water and soap after touching or playing with your pets. This will prevent you from contracting Corona virus as well as other bacteria like Salmonella and E Coli. Also don’t touch your mouth, eyes or nose with your unwashed hands after playing with your four-legged friends.

Myth: Pneumonia vaccines can help prevent Corona virus

This is a very misleading myth. Taking vaccines like Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) and pneumococcal won’t give you any kind of protection against COVID- 19. The virus is very new and it needs its vaccine. But even then vaccination against respiratory illnesses is highly recommended as it will help protect your health.

Myth: Eating garlic will help in providing immunity from Corona virus

There’s been no study that shows this statement to be true. But eating healthy will help your body stay fit which in turn will help in battling the virus better in case you get infected by it.

Medicine for treating Corona virus

As said above, until now there is no specific medicine that can treat or even prevent Corona virus. But there are clinical trials underway and vaccine kits are being readied for human testing. The only thing one can do for now is to be safe and look out for the symptoms. But it’s also important to know what medicines or vaccines are being developed by pharmaceutical companies to combat this pandemic.

Here are some of the major COVID- 19 drugs which are being developed all over the world to help treat the fast-spreading disease:

INO-4800 by Inovio Pharmaceuticals and Beijing Advaccine Biotechnology

Beijing Advaccine Biotechnology and Inovio Pharmaceuticals have collaborated to advance the latter’s vaccine called INO-4800. The cost of the vaccine development is supported by a $9 million grant from the CEPI or Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. Currently, pre-clinical testing for the virus has begun for manufacturing the clinical product. Design for human trials has been completed as well and the company has readied 3,000 doses for the human clinical trials which are being planned to be conducted all across China, US, and South Korea as well. Large scale manufacturing of the drugs is also being done.

As for the human trials, it’s been said that it will begin from April 2020 in the US in 30 healthy volunteers. After the US, this trial will move on to South Korea and China. As for the home country from where the virus originally came from, a phase one clinical trial is being planned there.

Remdesivir (GS-5734) by Gilead Sciences

Developed by Gilead Sciences, a previously ineffective Ebola drug is now being tested in Asian countries for its use against Corona virus. Currently, in its phase two of pre-clinical trials, the drug is being used on 761 people in a placebo-controlled, randomised and double-blind study in Wuhan. A report by The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), has stated that Remdesivir does seem to have improved the clinical condition of people affected with Corona virus in the US.

Apart from Gilead, the University of Nebraska Medical Center is also engaged in carrying out clinical trials for testing the efficacy as well as the safety of the drug.

APN01 by University of British Columbia and APEIRON Biologics

A drug named APN01, developed by APEIRON Biologics is currently being tested as a treatment for COVID- 19 in China. It’s in its phase one trials and is based on research carried out by a University of British Columbia professor for treating SARS. The SARS research proved that it was the ACE2 protein which was the main highway for the SARS virus. So the clinical trials will be focused on testing the efficacy of the drug in reducing the load in patients. Data used in the trial will then be used to figure out if any additional trials will be needed in a large number of people.

mRNA-1273 vaccine by Moderna and Vaccine Research Center

Moderna and the Vaccine Research Center and NIAID or the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases have come together to develop a Corona virus vaccine. It targets the Spike protein of COVID- 19. The first phase of the clinical trials is scheduled to begin in April.

Leronlimab drug by CytoDyn

The company CytoDyn is looking into leronlimab as a probable Corona virus drug. Leronlimab is a CCR5 antagonist. It is already in its phase two clinical trials for the treatment of HIV and has been awarded the fast-track approval status by the US’s Food and Drug Administration.

Intranasal Corona virus vaccine by Altimmune

The US clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company Altimmune is developing an Intranasal Corona virus vaccine. This vaccine is being made based on a vaccine tech platform which is very similar to NasoVAX. This is an influenza vaccine that was developed by Altimmune. Currently, the design, as well as the synthesis of the vaccine, is fully completed and the trial is moving on to animal testing.

Avian Corona virus Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) vaccine by MIGAL Research Institute

Israel’s MIGAL Research Institute has modified an IBV or Infectious Bronchitis Virus vaccine originally used to treat avian Corona virus to work for Covid-19. The vaccine has indeed shown efficacy in its pre-clinical trials. This is seemingly working because the IBV vaccine which was developed has a high genetic similarity to the Corona virus which is now affecting people. Currently, the institute is working with other potential partners to produce the vaccine and get the needed safety approvals for the in-vivo testing.

Brilacidin by Innovation Pharmaceuticals

Brilacidin is a defensive mimetic drug that can be a potential treatment for the Corona virus pandemic. Developed by Innovation Pharmaceuticals, this drug has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antibacterial properties in several clinical trials. As such the company is currently planning to get research collaborations as well as get federal grants to keep on developing the COVID-19 vaccine. For now, Innovation Pharmaceuticals has begun investigating the drug for oral mucositis in cancer-stricken people as well as for inflammatory bowel disease.

Recombinant subunit vaccine by Clover Biopharmaceuticals

Clover Biopharmaceuticals is making use of its patented Trimer-Tag© technology to develop a recombinant subunit vaccine. The vaccine is being developed by making use of Covid-19’s trimeric S protein (S-Trimer). This is the element that binds the virus to the host cell, thus resulting in a viral infection. Apart from this, the company was successful in identifying antigen-specific antibodies. This was found in the serum of patients who have made full recovery after being affected by the virus.

It’s been predicted that a highly purified version of the S-Trimer vaccine will be available within 6 to 8 weeks for pre-clinical trials. If the trials are successful then it can be expected that the production of the vaccine will be fast. This is because the company has its in-house cGMP biomanufacturing facilities.

TNX-1800 by Tonix Pharmaceuticals

Tonix Pharmaceuticals partnered with a non-profit research organization called Southern Research to develop TNX-1800, a COVID- 19 vaccines. The vaccine will express a protein which was derived from the virus that causes the new Corona virus infection. This vaccine is like a modified form of horsepox virus that was developed by making use of Tonix’s proprietary horsepox vaccine platform. But the vaccine isn’t fully ready yet as Southern Research has yet to evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine.

Vaxart’s Corona virus vaccine

Vaxart is making use of its proprietary oral vaccine platform, VAAST to develop an oral vaccine for Corona virus that will be available in tablet form. The company will make the vaccine according to the published genome of 2019-nCOV. But it is yet to be tested in pre-clinical trials for systemic and mucosal responses.

Linear DNA Vaccine by Applied DNA Sciences and Takis Biotech

Applied DNA Sciences’ subsidiary LineaRx along with Takis Biotech came together to make a linear DNA vaccine for Corona virus treatment. The collaboration will make use of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based on DNA manufacturing technology to create the vaccine. This PCR tech allows several advantages like improved production speed, high levels of purity, absence of bacterial contaminants and antibiotics. Moreover, the vaccine gene developed by making use of this technology can be used without inserting it into a patient’s genome. The design for one of the vaccine parts is based on the Spike gene of the Corona virus while the other half is based on the antigenic portions of the protein. For now, the vaccine in its animal testing phase.

MERS CoV Corona virus Vaccines by Novavax

In 2012, the first MERS Corona virus was identified in Saudi Arabia and 2013, Novavax developed a novel a Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Corona virus vaccine, the candidate. The vaccine is developed by making use of the company’s recombinant nanoparticle vaccine technology. It binds itself to the major Surface S-protein and prevents infection by bringing in immune responses. This much was seen in the laboratory tests. Many nanoparticle vaccines have been produced for animals and the company is aiming to begin with human trials this year.

Inovio Pharma’s INO-4700

Inovio is a partnership with GeneOne Life Science is developing the INO-4700 which is an investigation of DNA immunotherapy. This vaccine will be given intramuscularly by making use of the Cellectra® delivery device. In the test trials, the vaccine was well received and it showed a high immune response in 94% of the people affected with the virus. It shows these results in its early-stage clinical trials for the MERS-CoV. Along with this, the vaccine was also able to generate wide T cell results in around 88% of the patients.

Galidesivir by Biocryst Pharma

Galidesivir or BCX4430 is a nucleoside RNA polymerase inhibitor that is useful in disturbing the process of viral copy or replication. It has already shown a wide spectrum of activity against a huge range of pathogens including COVID- 19. This drug has shown benefits in people affected by deadly viruses like Zika, Ebola, Yellow fever and Marburg.

Currently, the drug is in advanced development under the Animal Rule to properly combat various kinds of viral threats. This includes Corona virus along with flaviviruses filoviruses, bunyaviruses, paramyxoviruses, togaviruses, and arenaviruses.

REGN3048-3051 by Regeneron

This drug is the combination of two monoclonal neutralising antibodies called REGN3051 and REGN3048. Both the stated antibodies bind themselves to the S-protein of MERS Corona virus. It was first discovered by Regeneron and it is currently being studied for its effectiveness against Corona virus infection.

When the drug was intravenously administered to an animal subject then it resulted in high-level elimination of the MERS Corona virus. The drug was successfully able to help in circulating blood with low levels of viral loads in the lungs. The first human trials are underway in 48 patients where the tolerability and safety of the drug will be tested. These trials are being sponsored by the NIAID or the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Actemra by Roche

This doesn’t target Corona virus directly. Instead, it is helpful when it comes to treating the complications which arise die to Corona virus. The Actemra drug can prevent cytokine storms or even the overreaction of the immune system. It is latter which is considered to be the main cause behind the organ failure that leads to death in some of the patients affected by the disease. Apart from this, the drug is also being evaluated for a clinical trial in China where around 200 Corona virus patients will be enrolled. It should be noted that only China has given this drug the green signal for being used in case of complications arising from Corona virus.

All these above vaccines and drug trials give a lot of hope for the Corona virus pandemic. But it should be kept in mind that for now there’s no clear vaccine or drug. This means that all you can rely upon for now to prevent contracting Corona virus is using precaution. Make sure to always wash your hands with soap and clean water. Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure that you get your fingertips as well as your fingers. Apart from this, make sure that you don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your unwashed hands as this can give the virus an entry point.

You can also opt to wear a mask when out in public places. There are a lot of myths going around Corona virus. It’s important to stay fully informed about what’s going on. Correct information will prevent you from sending yourself as well as others into a meaningless panic. Stay Safe from corona virus keep washing your hands time to time.
